See, Marty? It's not only me (I???) who thinks that Chubby Wise's version of Orange Blossom Special can't be beat!! Altho Casey may be a little prejudiced since she got to play OBS with Chubby in Florida when she was a young bass player. Her introduction to Chubby was seeing him clear his throat, hock (hawk?) a big loogy (sp???), and spit it on the ground. Then we practiced a note or two of a few songs and went on stage!

Hi Casey, I saw Steve at "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass" Festival in San Fran on Oct. 3. He used the same sentence -- about his dream to play at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival - today I feel I'm closer to that goal. He was a hoot ! Loved it. Also saw Ricky Skaggs and Emmylou Harris, just to name a few. You & your family need to sign up to play for this Festival -- I can picture you up on the Banjo Stage !www.strictlybluegrass.com/2009/.

I agree with Steve (in Japan), great article, Casey! What it must have been like to be there. I think Steve Martin is bringing fresh interest to bluegrass. It's good to see.

Speaking of that, this is probably as close as I'll get to seeing Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icMTVV5Lwaw

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Marty,
Actually Earl played "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" not "Daddy Played the Banjo". They did that one earlier in the show, but Graham played the Earl part.

Yeah, Nicky does a great OBS, but no one will ever top the version that Chubby Wise played. It was perfect.

Dear Casey,
As you know, I am a huge SCR fan and I love "Daddy Played the Banjo". I am sorry I couldn't see Earl play it. What fun. I really thought that would happen at IBMA. I told Murphy one time how great a job SCR did with Orange Blossom Special and I got a history lesson about who could really play that tune. I still think Nicky does a great job making train sounds. Great blog and great pictures.

Thanks

Great entry and reporting, Casey, and I feel as if I were there at the Ryman Auditorium on the night of the 11th. Reading this reminded me of your "Look A-Yonder Comin'" entry of Monday, August 11th, 2008. Others reading today's entry might want to go back to that 8/11/08 entry and click on to the album jacket pictured in the upper right and then listen to song #1.
